Pimpri, 3rd August 2026: A mother and her 19-year-old daughter died during treatment at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital in Pimpri, a day after they were found unconscious at their residence along with another member of the family, who was declared dead before treatment. The incident occurred at Karishma Glory Housing Society in Morwadi, Pimpri, and has shocked the local community.
The deceased have been identified as Vinod Pillai (50), Silja Pillai (45), and Purnima Pillai (19). According to police, the family was found unconscious inside their home on the morning of August 1 after an apparent suicide attempt. Vinod Pillai was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital, while Silja and Purnima were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Preliminary investigations suggest that the family may have taken the extreme step due to financial difficulties. Police recovered a handwritten note in which Vinod Pillai reportedly stated that the family was ending their lives because of financial distress and that no one should be held responsible.
Investigators said the family had allegedly created toxic fumes inside the house, leading to all three losing consciousness. Authorities have not ruled out other angles and are continuing their investigation.
Police have seized the mobile phones of the deceased for forensic examination to determine whether there was any external influence or communication related to the incident. They are also examining the circumstances surrounding the procurement of materials recovered from the residence as part of the investigation.
According to police, Vinod Pillai had previously worked for a private company but had left his job in 2024. Silja Pillai was employed as a coordinator at a private school, while Purnima was a second-year undergraduate student at a college in Chinchwad.
Sant Tukaram Nagar Police have registered the case and are conducting further investigations to determine the exact circumstances leading to the deaths.
